RIVERSIDE, Calif. – With summer fast approaching, there are two people that want to make sure you keep a watchful eye on outdoor water use during the peak season. They include Toro’s Mike Baron and Rob Starr, hosts of a weekly radio show, called The Water Zone, on NBC News affiliate KCAA 1050 in Southern California. Baron and Starr began this pioneering talk radio show to call attention to news and conservation efforts around the record California drought. While the drought in California is essentially over for now, water resources are strained in other regions throughout the country.

“Water is a resource that we cannot count on to renew itself year after year,” says Baron. “This is why we continue our efforts to educate the public and keep the water conversation discussion moving forward. This is information everyone will ultimately benefit from, no matter where in the country they live.”

Indeed, many who recognized the importance of getting the word out have taken advantage of being able to reach a wider audience through the radio show. Guests like television host and environmental activist Nick Federoff, State of California Secretary of Natural Resources John Laird, New York Times bestselling author Seth M. Siegel, Israeli Consul Yaki Lopez, U.S. Congressman Tom McClintock and Mark Lambert, CEO of IDE Technologies – all have contributed to the show’s effort to ensure water remains a relevant topic throughout the nation. Show topics cover everything from easy ways homeowners can save on outdoor water use to unique approaches in reclamation by municipalities.

Last month, The Water Zone’s efforts were recognized with a resolution presented by California State Senator Jose Medina. In addition, the show has partnered with the Irrigation Association, the leading organization for the irrigation industry, to provide its members with education credits for listening to select shows scheduled throughout the year.

The Water Zone broadcasts live Thursdays at 6pm PST on KCAA 1050 AM, 102.3 FM and 106.5 FM in Southern California. Outside of the listening area, the show can be accessed via UStream or at www.kcaaradio.com.
