The Toro Company Partners With EarthLab in Community Orchard Project
Orchard project will enhance local community, while promoting sustainability among local students and families
EL CAJON, Calif.– The Toro Company is committed to supporting communities and organizations in their effort to apply more efficient and sustainable water use practices. As such, Toro is proud to announce its sponsorship of the EarthLab Community Orchard at the Groundwork EarthLab Outdoor Science and Climate Action Center in San Diego.
The EarthLab is a 4-acre outdoor park, managed by Groundwork San Diego-Chollas Creek on behalf of the San Diego Unified School District. The organization serves over 3,000 low-income students and their families throughout the school year and during the summer, and promotes academic advancement, environmental stewardship, climate action and careers in conservation technology.
The project includes the installation of a 40-tree orchard with Toro donating all drip irrigation equipment for this project, including Blue Stripe® hose, micro-sprinklers, and NGE® emitters that will allow for water-efficient irrigation for years to come.
“Toro has built a legacy of giving back to the communities where our employees live and work, in ways that enrich the enjoyment of the outdoor environment, support education and promote the efficient use of water,” said Phil Burkart, vice president of The Toro Company’s Irrigation and Lighting Businesses. “We are happy to contribute to the EarthLab’s efforts to promote conservation, beautification and community health for San Diego-area residents.”
The orchard was installed October 13, 2017, during an event organized by Groundwork San Diego-Chollas Creek. Students worked alongside volunteers to plant the drought-resistant fruit trees, donated by La Mesa Rotary.
Groundwork San Diego focuses on improving the environment, economic and quality-of-life in southeast San Diego. The organization strives to bring about the sustained regeneration, improvement and management of the physical environment through the development of community-based partnerships, which empower people, businesses and organizations to promote environmental, economic and social well-being.
